Due to the rapid development of science and communication technology, the whole world has become a global village. In the global and boundary free era, today’s communication tools make it easy to bridge cultures and regions. Cross-cultural and trans-national communication become the crucial elements to promote regional peace, stimulate prosperity, and make improvements to individual countries. Obviously,in establishing significant cooperation and bi-lateral ties between countries in the region and across the globe, communication has a primary role in influencing the mindset and actions of people across cultures.
The marginalization of nation states allied to the suspension of the development of economic and cultural boundaries, encourages people to reconsider confronting social cultures and effective communication, which is a consequence of globalization. It also stimulates the challenge of values and political systems which exist in the landscape of global media and electronic scenarios as well as the framework of cultural boundaries.
Information and new technologies make the interaction between culture and nation states much easier. However cross-cultural communication based on internet communication tools can threaten the cultural security of nations. This includes traditional cultural values, and the conservation of cultural heritage. The confusion of globalization allied to westernization brings about the cultural impacts of western mainstream culture and confronts its main ideologies on to developing countries. In this case, effective communication strategies are considered as effective power sources which ease possible conflicts between cultures. This area is central to several current policy discussions.
The Asia Pacific region as a rapidly developing economic area is comparatively immature in politic and cultural contexts. The promotion of mass media and new media technologies has increased this uncertainty. For centuries, the Asia Pacific area has been at the edge and somewhat detached from the western world. Since the middle period of the last century, it has striven to rid itself of the control which came from both old and new colonialism, having gone through many kinds of hardships and difficulties in this process.
In a global context, questions emerge as to how the Asian Pacific nations and peoples maintain their own development and cultural values, and how they establish smooth co opoeration between nations generally and particularly between this area and the western world. There are also issues to do with how to achieve economic prosperity, political civilization, social equilibrium, and cultural diversities. These issues are often determined by the effective use of mass media and communication strategies.
Therefore, the issues as to how we can reconsider the media, culture, and associated boundaries of the Asia Pacific region in order to explore effective strategies which preserve core cultural values are crucial. The challenge is to train peoples’ awareness of being progressive and rational global citizens, whilst also developing Asian Pacific diversity culture and the harmonious relationships between different ethnic groups. Increasing prosperity will extend global visions, serving the need to ease tension, conflict and war, The maintaining of regional peace and associated lifestyle and prosperity benefit will be a main theme for discussion in the forthcoming PACA conference.
This conference will be hosted in China for the first time. This is very exciting and will evoke considerable imagination and dialogue. China with its long history and vast territory in the Asian Pacific area is an indispensable contributor to the economic and emerging cultural identity of the region and its future development.
These issues are now in particular focus, coming as they do soon after a period where the the western world has experienced turbulent events such as the integration of Eastern Europe, the new terrorist threat and 9/11, the Afghanistan war, and the recent financial crisis. Therefore it is timely and significant to review and analyze China’s experience in this global context. China holds not only a fine historical tradition of communicating with the West, but is also embracing the rapid development of modern media. The role of mass media in the transformation of modern China as well as the broader Asian Pacific Area will be the main theme for the conference. |
